Life of Pi Paragraphs Plot: 92 Chapter 92 is a story of its own. It begins by exciting the reader with something new: an island, then it continues by describing the new lifestyle. Most of the chapter feels like a sort of relief from the horrible journey through the ocean and it calms the reader. In the end of the chapter, the plot twist where the organism is actually carnivorous feels like a betrayal because Pi was given a happy, relaxing life, only to have it violently snatched from him yet again. It is apparent that Pi wishes that he had not found out about the organism’s secret because he says â€Å"Ah, how I wish that moment had never been! But for it I might have lived there for years-why, for the rest of my life on that island.† (Martel 310)This shows that he is so happy there that he would have preferred to unknowingly live on an island that is trying to eat him than to know and therefore leave the island. The Coca-Cola Company was founded in 1886 by Dr. John S. Pemberton, a chemist, in Atlanta. There is, however, general lack of autonomy between the manufacturing and bottling plants, whereby bottling companies in Australia and the retailers are expected to stick to some code of conduct, particularly in product mixing, bottling and retailing, established by the Coca-Cola Company board of governors. Further, a reliable supply chain management ensures that the operations and products of the Coca-Cola Company are maintained at length without interruption or weakening. Figure 2: The closed-loop flow of water Conclusion This aspect of sustainability emphasized by the companys supply chain management has led me to perceive the imminent intermarriage of sorts between sustainability practices and supply chain management practices, the main drive of them being a need to minimize wastage especially in water and packaging material as well as reduction (and, by 2020, elimination) of carbon footprint in manufacture, distribution and retailing of Coca-Cola products. This intermarriage is, however, without its shortfalls. For instance, CCE relies on a mutual agreement between itself and its business partners to effect the goal of minimization of carbon footprint. This requires bringing all players suppliers, raw material producers, manufacturers, bottling plants, distributors and retailers on board. It can be an uphill task to convince a raw material producer or supplier or product distributor to use some methods or materials and not others. Further, the reliance on these players to measure and monitor their carbon footprint is hardly reliable because, business ethics aside, what would stop them from cooking up figures in their KPI reports to seem interested in a common sustainability goal? There is, however, a way around this. Recommendations The CCE could consider buying these raw material processing plants, suppliers, beverage bottlers and product distributors so that they can have complete control over the entire value chain, from obtaining raw materials from the natural world to serving customers with their 500+ brands not just in Australia but worldwide. This would make regulation easier as sustainability practices wouldnt be a factor of mutual agreement but rather a key part of the overall business plan. Also, the company needs to examine the effects of diet products on their standard product sales. Owing to increased customer health and better-lifestyle awareness, there has been a general preference in diet coke, for instance over standard coke. O counter this, the amount of sugars and sweeteners in regular soft drinks needs to be reduced as well. These patients have some rights such as the right to refuse treatment if they are not endangering others or themselves and the right to request for discharge (Tasman and Mohr, 2011). Emergency admission patients are the one hospitalized following mental illness symptoms and behaviors that can inflict harm to other people and to them. After the evaluation and treatment of the patients, they can either be discharged or have their status changed to voluntary patients. While under the emergency admission status, the patients’ movement into and out of the institution is restricted but they are allowed to consult with their legal representatives (Tasman and Mohr, 2011). Involuntary hospitalization is administered to mentally ill persons whose condition endanger themselves and others, but refuse to be hospitalized or treated. Therefore, this group of mentally ill persons is held in a mental hospital against their will. They are examined and if they are found to be mentally ill and likely to cause harm to themselves or others, they are admitted under involuntary status (Curtis, 2001). The care provided to mentally ill persons is impacted by the legal system. Mental health professionals are required to understand the laws that regulate this practice in order to be able to take care of the patients, while at the same time protecting their safety and rights. The purpose, practice, and structure of mental health care have evolved over the years. A common trend is deinstitutionalization, which involves having fewer patients residing in mental hospitals and delivering less mental illness treatments in public hospitals. This practice involves the release of patients from mental hospitals, reduction in the admission of pati ents, and reducing the length of time that a patient is held at the mental hospital. During times of war or economic deterioration, the funding to these institutions was stopped. This led to poor living conditions including. The idea of deinstitutionalization was conceived in the 1920s and 1930s as an alternative to mental hospitalization. The community services provided housing, supervision, and cheaper costs. The community services were also expected to contribute to better integration of the patients with the society. In the 1960s, there was a great increase in deinstitutionalization and the period of time that patients were supposed to stay in mental hospitals was reduced by more than half. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy influenced the passing of the Community Mental Health Centers Act, which provided funding to community health facilities that served the mentally ill members of the society. This Act led to increased deinstitutionalization. The federal government funded mental health care (Dowdall, 1996). Deinstitutionalization Deinstitutionalization provides mentally ill patients with a more liberal and humane treatment in community-based facilities. It helps mental patients to adjust to the life outside the mental institution. This is achieved by removing the patients from the institutions where their social behavior may be adapted to the conditions in that institutional environment. The patients are able to mak e their own choices and therefore they become empowered and free. The individuals are free from institutional expectations and rules and therefore, they adjust more easily to the day-to-day life (Barry and Farmer, 2002). Conclusion From the above discussion, it is clear that the practice of hospitalizing the mentally ill individuals in the society has undergone remarkable changes. Mental patients no longer have to spend many years in mental hospitals but can attend community-based facilities where they are helped to integrate with the society. Deinstitutionalization has worked well for most mental patients but has had some negative impacts. Some patients have been unable to attain better social integration and have remained jobless and without social contacts. Other patients were discharged before they were well-prepared and ended up going to jail or becoming homeless.
